Neurology

Neurology is the diagnosis, treatment and management of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, and disorders of the nerves and muscles that activate movement and transmit sensations to the brain.

We offer a variety of clinics, including:

  • Inpatient consultations
  • Epilepsy consultations
  • Multiple sclerosis clinics
  • Neuromuscular disease
  • First Seizure/epilepsy clinics

These services can be accessed via referral from your GP or following admittance to the Emergency Department. All referrals are then triaged by one of our Consultant Neurologists.

Currently, approximately 30% of all referrals are dealt with via advice only and do not require an appointment within the Hospital.

Peterborough City and Stamford Hospitals

We treat most neurological conditions, with some exceptions. For example, elderly patients who have Parkinson’s disease as well as other medical issues are looked after by our Care Of The Elderly staff. Chronic fatigue syndrome is managed in primary care.

Our services

Peterborough City Hospital runs consultant outpatient neurology clinics, as well as providing an inpatient consultation service. Our specialist clinics run on a daily basis and are based in the General Outpatients Department.

Our consultants are also linked to the neurosciences centre at Addenbrooke's Hospital, where additional specialist investigations and inpatient care are provided.

Hinchingbrooke

We offer a full range of investigative facilities for outpatients, including CT and MRI, which are performed on site. Our neurophysiological investigations such as EEG and EMG are performed at Peterborough City Hospital.

The department is supported by community-based Parkinson’s disease and Multiple Sclerosis nurses, who share care with the hospital team and offer support and advice helplines.

The department works closely with the physiotherapy, occupational therapy and orthotics departments, and patients are referred to these departments if required.
