Breast Pain Clinic, Doddington

Our breast pain clinic at Doddington offers support for concerned women with breast pain. This one-stop specialist clinic is held at Doddington Community Hospital. It allows the quick assessment and support of women in the community with breast pain only, providing there is the absence of a lump or any other abnormalities. Patients with a breast lump(s) or other abnormalities will continue to follow the usual 2 week wait (2WW) pathway.  

Breast pain alone (mastalgia) has no association with breast cancer and it affects up to 80% of women. It can be related to the menstrual cycle (cyclic breast pain) or not (non-cyclic breast pain).


Women over the age of 16 with breast pain will be booked directly into the breast pain clinic, where they will see a breast specialist. Breast pain and family history of breast cancer will be assessed together, by a doctor or Breast Specialist Nurse during your appointment. 

Following the risk assessment the specialist’s aim is to identify women with breast pain who may be at increased risk of developing breast cancer in the future. This would offer the opportunity for prevention and earlier diagnosis. Patients identified at increased risk would be referred directly to the specialist Family History Team.

Cancer Services at Doddington

The Peterborough Community Cancer Nurses (PCCN) are holding a clinic at Doddington hospital on a Thursday to meet the needs of oncology and haematology patients in the nearby area.  Until now, we have been travelling to patient’s homes which we will continue to do, but the nurses can see a much greater number of patients at one base.  The clinic will start at 9.30am and run until a time to be seen, depending on how many patients are booked in. 

Services offered: Phlebotomy for oncology/haematology treatment and consultations.  Supportive treatment such as hormone injections or immunotherapy injections.  PICC line and implanted port care.  Delivery of medications.

Cardiology at Doddington

On the first Tuesday of each month, Cardiology offer a new and follow up patient general cardiology clinic, attended by a Consultant and Registrar, along with an Echo Service, Ambulatory ECG monitors can be fitted. 

Patients have access to the full range of diagnostics and investigations offered at other NWAngliaFT sites, such as CT MRI and Nuclear Medicine. 

Cardiac Investigations: 

Echo Physiologists attend the outpatient clinic at Doddington for 2 afternoons per month.

2 members of staff alternating between scanning and reporting using a portable scanner and lap top reporting system linked to the Trust IT system.

Capacity for 6 patients per session with clinics running between 1.30pm and 5pm on the 1st and third Tuesday of the month. 

Ear, Nose and Throat at Doddington

The team see both adult and paediatric patients at Doddington on a Tuesday 9am - 2pm. Some of the ENT conditions people attend with are:

Ear

  • Ear wax removal
  • Ear infections
  • Reduction in hearing
  • Dizziness
  • Glue ear

Nose

  • Nasal blockage
  • Nasal polyps
  • Nose bleeds(Epistaxis)
  • Management of snoring with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) symptoms.

Throat

  • Globus (feeling of a lump in the throat)
  • Reflux
  • Tonsillitis and other throat infections
  • Swallowing problems 

Investigations/ procedures undertaken in the clinic

  • Pure tone audiometry and tympanometry
  • Microsuction
  • Flexible nasendoscopy
  • Nasal cauterization 

Any surgical procedures patients require are usually undertaken at Peterborough City Hospital or Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Respiratory Investigations at Doddington

We offer a wide range of routine and advanced respiratory tests across Hinchingbrooke, Peterborough City Hospital and Doddington.  Our tests provide invaluable data for diagnosis, monitoring and treatment for a variety of respiratory conditions.

At Doddington we are able to provide the majority of the tests that are performed at our larger sites. We provide tests for patients who are under the chest consultant team and also lung function tests for patients that are referred into our direct access diagnostic lung function testing service. 

Our clinical tests are divided into: 

Routine breathing tests 

  • Spirometry
  • Gas transfer test
  • Static lung volumes (nitrogen washout)
  • Reversibility Studies
  • Six minute walk tests
  • FeNO

Advanced breathing tests 

  • Bronchial Challenge – Mannitol
  • Skin prick test
General respiratory clinic 

We also hold general respiratory clinics where patients are reviewed by a Consultant Respiratory Physician. These clinics are currently running on the 1st and 3rd Friday afternoon of each month. In this clinic, we review new and follow up patients with respiratory conditions such as Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Lung Fibrosis, etc. We see patients that live anywhere in The Fenlands who have been referred by a GP or referred by clinicians in neighbouring hospitals - Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals.  

We also have a smoking cessation support service run by Healthy Peterborough on Friday mornings. This is for people looking for help to stop smoking. They can give advice on different types of nicotine replacement therapy and provide you with these products along with advice on other ways to help you stop smoking. They are more than happy to support people at any stage of their journey.
