Safeguarding

Our Commitment:

At North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, safeguarding is central to our care. Across our hospitals in Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke, and Stamford, we are committed to protecting the health, wellbeing, and human rights of our patients, staff, and visitors, ensuring everyone can live free from harm, abuse, and neglect.

Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility — staff, patients, carers, and visitors all play a role in keeping people safe.

What is Safeguarding?

Safeguarding means:

  • Protecting people’s rights to live safely, free from abuse and neglect
  • Promoting wellbeing and preventing harm
  • Supporting people to make informed choices and maintain independence

It applies to children, young people, adults at risk, and maternity care.

Children's Safeguarding

We have a duty to protect children and young people from harm, neglect, and exploitation. Our children’s safeguarding team works closely with schools, social services, and local safeguarding boards to ensure:

  • Early identification of risks
  • Support for families in difficulty
  • Protection from abuse, neglect, and exploitation
  • Advocacy for the child’s voice in all decisions

  • Protection from neglect, abuse, and exploitation through referrals and sharing information.
  • Advice and support to staff on how best to Safeguard Adults at Risk in our care.
  • Guidance on the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
  • Partnership working with local authorities, police, and voluntary agencies

  • Protecting unborn and newborn babies from harm
  • Supporting mothers experiencing domestic abuse, substance misuse, or mental health difficulties
  • Working with midwives, health visitors, and social services to provide joined‑up care

Prevent Duty Statement

As part of the national Prevent strategy, North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust has a duty to safeguard individuals who may be vulnerable to radicalisation or exploitation by extremist groups.

We ensure that:

  • Staff are trained to recognise signs of radicalisation and extremist influence
  • Concerns are reported promptly to safeguarding leads and the Prevent team
  • We work with local authorities, police, and community partners to provide support and intervention
  • Our approach balances protection with respect for individual rights and freedoms

Prevent is about safeguarding people from harm, not about targeting communities. If you have concerns, please contact our safeguarding teams or the Safeguarding Hub on 01733 673778.

We ensure that:

  • Our staff are trained to identify and respond to concerns about exploitation
  • We work with local safeguarding boards, police, and partner agencies to protect victims
  • Our supply chains are monitored to prevent exploitation and unethical practices
  • We comply fully with the Modern Slavery Act 2015
  • Read our Modern Slavery Statement.

If you suspect modern slavery or human trafficking, please report it immediately to a member of staff or the safeguarding team.

We are committed to:

  • Identifying and supporting patients, staff, and visitors who may be experiencing domestic abuse
  • Providing confidential advice and referral to specialist support services
  • Training staff to recognise signs of abuse and respond sensitively and effectively
  • Working with local authorities, police, and voluntary organisations to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable
