North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford and Rutland Hospital has successfully retained its Level 3 Disability Leader Confident Status.
The Disability Confident Employer Scheme encourages employers to look at how they recruit, retain and develop people living with disabilities and what improvements can be made for each area.
Deborah Gallacher, Equality Diversity and Inclusion and Armed Forces Project Coordinator for the Trust said: “This recognition marks an important milestone in our journey to reimagine places for people to thrive. Our purpose drives us to create environments – for our colleagues, partners, and communities – where everyone can belong, contribute and succeed.
“Retaining Disability Confident Leader status shows that we are putting our people promise into action by creating opportunities and relationships so that everyone who works for and with us feels included, invested in, and treated with care.”
Over 19,000 organisations have signed up for the Disability Confident Scheme across the UK. Since joining back in 2020, the Trust remains among the 4% (690 businesses) accredited as Disability Confident Leaders, recognised for leading the way in inclusive practices and independently assessed to the highest standards.
Reaccreditation for the Disability Confident Scheme happens every three years and involves reviewing self-assessment, arranging a date for validation, updating evidence templates and submitting documentation to be re-validated at the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance (VCHA).
The Trust has worked on a range of ways people with disabilities can enter the workforce, providing a non-linear approach that meets the needs of the individual. Such as volunteering, supported internships and apprenticeships. The Trust employs six supported interns with learning disability and/or autism, our young learners are accompanied by Job Coaches and Trust staff mentor/buddy.
