Acclaimed consultant histopathologist Dr Suzy Lishman CBE has been announced as the new Chair Elect for the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death (NCEPOD).
She will be the first pathologist to hold the position of Chair of NCEPOD in its 35-year history.
Dr Lishman, who is also the current president of the Association of Clinical Pathologists, will officially take up the post in November 2024.
A pathologist and medical examiner for North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Lishman has worked with NCEPOD since 2005 and has been a trustee since 2019. She will replace Ian Martin as Chair when he completes his term in office.
A past president of the Royal College of Pathologists, Dr Lishman has also worked on the implementation of medical examiners for over a decade as well as training more than 2,000 medical examiners from all specialties.
Commenting on her appointment, Dr Lishman said: “I am delighted to be taking on the role of chair of NCEPOD after almost 20 years of working with the organisation.
“I first got involved as an assessor for the report on the coroner’s autopsy, and then represented the Royal College of Pathologists on the Steering Group for several years, so have seen the wide-ranging, high-quality work that the organisation does.
“I have enjoyed being a trustee for the last five years and look forward to continuing to work with the Board and Steering Group as Chair.”
Dr Lishman also chairs the Ethics and Welfare Committee of the Royal Veterinary College and the Scientific Advisory Board of Bowel Cancer UK.
