Staff working in the Hinchingbrooke Hospital endoscopy department have recently received praise from a national standards body following a review of the service.
The Joint Advisory Group (JAG) accreditation is reviewed each year, with a visit to the site every five years to ensure high standards are maintained, and looks at high-quality standards for safety, workforce, training, patient experience and clinical expertise.
The team of 41 carried out 6,191 procedures for 2025, five days a week and worked hard to develop portfolios, evidence and to showcase the improvements they have made. This took months to complete and used this to illustrate how they have made a big impact to patient care.
The team now offer pre-operative telephone assessments; nurse-led consent for procedures, which provides our patients with much needed time to prepare for their procedures; video capsule endoscopy, which is a non-invasive procedure that looks at the small bowel and an out hour's service which provides a life-saving procedure for Upper GI patient bleeds.
Ines De Azedvedo Rocha, Unit Manager said: “This has been a big team effort and I feel incredibly proud of how everyone has worked together on this. It is so important that we continue to uphold the high standards that are required, but we have built on this further by offering additional services. These are all in addition to the service we already provide, so it makes a huge difference to patient care."
Some of the particularly positive comments included the seamless pathway for patients with disabilities from pre-admission through to discharge; the use of language line as a portable system that is used to support patients at each stage of their journey with the visibility of the translator providing reassurance for patients; the superb nursing leadership; the same day CT scan staging which has had a positive impact in reducing the length of the patients; cancer pathway to treatment.
