Daredevil cancer nurse Mel takes fundraising to new heights

Forget the run of the mill balloons and cake, the Huntingdon Community Cancer Nurses have taken their birthday celebrations to a whole new level.

HCCN is a unique team working with cancer patients to provide pre chemo assessment, triage and some treatments in their own homes to avoid unnecessary trips into hospital.

Mel takes to the skies

And while the team had its own party with colleagues at the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, one of the team went the extra mile (or several hundred feet) to mark the milestone.

Nurse Mel Scholes recently took part in aerobatic daredevil flight over Little Gransden with former aerobatic champion, Mark Jefferies, to raise money for the Hunts Community Cancer Network, which supports the team and cancer patients locally.

Mark dedicated his time and the experience for free, and Mel has smashed her £1,000 target for the HCCN which will help to support six patients with specialist cancer counselling and supporting them throughout their cancer treatment / journey.

Mel said: “It was every bit as hair raising as I expected it to be!  It was, however, an exhilarating experience and I’m really grateful to Mark for giving up his time. To date this has raised £1,750 for HCCN, so a huge thanks to all who have supported us.”

There’s still time to donate by visiting Mel’s JustGiving page.
