New digital pathology system brings faster results

A new Laboratory Information Management System that has fully integrated the Pathology services at Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals has gone live.

Pathology technician uses the new system Thanks to a £6.4m investment supported by the regional Pathology network, the Trust that runs the hospitals has upgraded to a new service that has reduced reliance upon paper and delivers faster results to GPs and patients, regardless of where blood samples are taken or tested. The new system harmonises the way tests for patients are managed which brings additional patient safety benefits.

The new system was launched at the end of October in a seamless switch thanks to the hard work and planning of the Pathology and Digital Teams.

Geraldine Wingfield-Hill, Chief Digital Information Officer at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford and Rutland Hospitals, said: “This is a fantastic step forward for our patients and staff. I would like to thank the implementation teams for their amazing planning and delivery of this long term project especially over the past 18 months.

“The first few weeks have gone well and with some excellent collaboration between hospital colleagues and GPs in our local communities.

“The new system has also helped future-proof the pathology service as it will enable other digital improvement projects to now take place, such as bedside label printing for pathology specimens.

“We look forward to further developing our digital Pathology Service to roll out more processes that can enhance the quality of results reporting.”
