Celebrating our amazing volunteers

Volunteers spent last week celebrating the amazing help they provide to our local hospitals. National Volunteers Week takes place each year but this year marked a milestone of 40 years, making it all the more special.

During the week, North West Anglia FT, which runs Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford Hospitals, spotlighted the various roles that volunteers hold across the three sites. The Trust has nearly 500 volunteers who between them have donated a staggering 73,763 hours in the last year – making an estimated 250,000 cups of tea in that time. With each brew comes a chat with the patient, making a huge difference to people in their time of need.

Carol North, Head of Volunteering at the Trust, commented: “We held a special thank you lunch party during the week to show our volunteers how grateful we are to them. We played games and had a disco, then certificates and badges were presented to dedicated long-serving volunteers. Thank you to each and every wonderful volunteer that gives up their time to come and serve our hospitals.”

Later in the week the Trust shared a story about an incredible hand massage volunteer, Kate, who helped a patient who had severely weakened hands. The patient sent Kate a message to say: “I just wanted you to know that the hand massage worked and I can do most things now thanks to the treatment I received. I am living in a supported flat being mostly independent. Thank you for your help it has given me back my life and made an immense difference to how many things I can do for myself.”
